Kolkata: A troubling situation has emerged regarding an alleged sexual assault at the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C). The father of the alleged victim stated on Saturday that his daughter was not harmed and that no wrongdoing occurred.
Earlier in the day, a Kolkata lower court placed the sole suspect, Premanand Mahaveer Toppannavar, also known as Parmanand Jain, aged 26, in police custody until July 19.
This statement starkly contrasts with the victim's account, which she provided in a formal complaint filed at the Haridevpur Police Station on Friday night, following the alleged assault.
According to her police report, she visited the boys' hostel on the IIM-C campus after being invited by the accused for counseling. She alleged that after consuming pizza and drinks offered by him, she lost consciousness and was subsequently raped.
However, her father claimed that she contacted him at 9:34 PM on Friday, stating she felt unwell after falling while getting out of a vehicle. He suggested that her loss of consciousness was due to this incident and expressed doubt about the police complaint, implying that she may have been pressured to make such claims.
While he did not specify who he believed pressured his daughter, he denied any prior acquaintance between her and the accused.
The accused's lawyer informed the media that his client met the victim through social media. He mentioned that the victim, who is said to be a professional psychological counselor, visited the Lake View Boys Hostel for counseling purposes. He urged the public to refrain from revealing his client's identity to protect his future.
The public prosecutor noted that investigators are currently analyzing the seized mobile phone of the accused.
